SOFRONAS SHINES WITH STELLAR RACE WEEKEND
AT MID-OHIO ON STOPTECH BRAKES
LEXINGTON, Ohio (August 2010) James Sofronas of Newport Beach, Calif. dominated the race weekend at the Mid-Ohio Grand Prix by scoring pole positions starts for the dual race event then bringing home first and second place finishes. The strong weekend in his No. 14 Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 featuring StopTech Trophy brakes has given both manufacturer and driver a boost in the 2010 SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championship standings.
Sofronas kicked off the weekend by edging out Mike Skeen with just a 0.003-second gap to capture the overall and GT class pole position for both races of the Mid-Ohio Grand Prix World Challenge doubleheader.
“This was really great, especially because I didn’t know it was a double-pole session until I was done,” Sofronas said of his two-birds-with-one-stone performance during the qualifying session. I’m really excited about our set-up and with StopTech I know we can out-brake anyone at the end of the race. ”StopTech's Trophy Big Brake Kits feature ultra lightweight track-only calipers paired up with patented race-ready AeroHats and AeroRotors for improved cooling airflow giving that extra edge when braking under race conditions.
Sofronas found himself on the podium a day later after a second place finish in the first race. In one way, he still got credit for the win. "I followed James for several laps to get a feel for the race pace," admitted race-winning Mike Skeen. "When he got caught up in traffic I went by... the ebb-and-flow just went our way today."
Sofronas was equally self-effacing. "It was all horsepower and brakes he would pull away down the straights and I would catch him in the brake zones," recalled Sofronas of his efforts to regain the lead from Skeen. "It was cat-and-mouse. Hats off to Mike."
Steve Ruiz, StopTech's Director of Engineering who keeps the Porsche running race-ready, made an adjustment to the vehicle before the second race of the weekend. Sofronas went on to lead every lap and win Round Nine of the World Challenge Championship. The race not only put Sofronas into the top 3 of the World Challenge GT Drivers Championship but also brought Porsche to within three points of Volvo for the lead in the Manufactures' Championship.
“I was far more aggressive through traffic this time,” Sofronas said of his fourth career win after fighting off a final lap challenge from Andy Pilgrim. " I saw this big Volvo nose that literally filled my entire mirror. I couldn’t see anything except this big blue hood. That would have been a tough one to lose."
Both races will be broadcast Saturday, Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern) on Versus. The World Challenge Championships next travel to VIRginia International Raceway for Rounds 10 and 11, for the weekend of September 10-12 before the final race of the season in October at the Utah Grand Prix.
