FALL 2008 FASHION RECAP: THE HOTTEST CARS WORE STOPTECH BRAKES
Los Angeles (December 2008) - As the season draws to a close, a look back at Fall 2008 reveals that StopTech ultra performance brakes adorned a wide array of news making vehicles. StopTech, the ultra performance division of Centric Parts, is a leading manufacturer, supplier and innovator of world class brake components and brake systems for production-based race cars and high performance vehicles on the street and track.
Perhaps most significant this Fall was the feat performed by the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, which comes equipped with StopTech ultra performance brake rotors. The Viper ventured out to Germany and set a new lap record of 7:22 on the famous Nurburgring, benefiting from the deft handling of the many neck-snapping turns that track offers. The Viper unseated the Corvette ZR-1 for this honor which only several weeks earlier bested the mark set by the Nissan GT-R.
The Ultimate Street Car Challenge was won this year by a Mitsubishi EVO X from AMS Performance sporting StopTech Big Brake Kits on the front and back. The coveted award is issued each year by Sport Compact Car Magazine after three extensive days of testing and performance challenges. The car managed the win despite being in third place and over 100 points behind the leader going into the skid pad and braking test portion of the evaluation.
MOPAR entered a full-blown competition Dodge Challenger SRT-8 named “Samantha” with StopTech brakes into the infamous Targa Newfoundland race this year and was on display at SEMA 2008 in Las Vegas. Targa Newfoundland is a grueling annual event spanning seven days and covering more than 1,300 miles of Canadian roads in sometimes brutal weather conditions. Samantha and her StopTech brakes proved their mettle by finishing 2nd in class and 22 nd overall, as one of only 39 cars out of the starting 70 that made it to the 2008 finish line.
Fall meant the end of the 2008 race season. The two biggest StopTech highlights centered around the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge series, where StopTech brakes are standard issue for several teams. James Sofronas captured his first-career SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge win on the second to last race of the season, leading every lap in his GMG Porsche equipped with StopTech brakes for a victory that earned Porsche the SCCA SPEED GT Manufacturers’ Championship. This was followed with Jason Saini earning the Rookie-of-the-Year for his season driving a StopTech MAZDA6 for Tri-Point.
The season capper for StopTech came not from a vehicle equipped with StopTech brakes, but one equipped with its CEO. Dino Crescentini was one of three drivers on the team that won the Baja Challenge at this year’s grueling Baja 1000. Baja Challenge cars are identically equipped touring cars with Subaru engines. The around the clock race tests any driver’s love of the sport.
